Trick or Treating I can’t remember the last time I dressed up for Halloween. Last year I celebrated by popping into Spooky Skate and skating (read: falling on my butt) around the ice rink a couple of times, sans costume. A few days ago, I was aimlessly scrolling through some old photos on my phone when I discovered a picture of 6 or 7 year old me dressed up as a crab. Since I’m smiling in the picture, I can only presume that I was highly amused by my get-up and probably hopped up on the mere anticipation of sugar. I was reminded of the days when Halloween meant spooky decorations, exciting costumes, and yes, the all-important trick-or-treating. The day started off like most Fridays, with 20.110 at 10am, followed by a 5.13 at 11am. As we entered the 5.13 lecture hall, our costumed TAs were holding large plastic bags of candy from which we each took a couple of pieces. One of the TA’s was even dressed as R.B. Woodward, I can’t help but be impressed all over again. This is the sight that greeted us at the front of the lecture hall: Professor Buchwald dressed as some incarnation of death (?). I have no idea. But hooray for costumes in class! After class ended around 4pm (6.0002 recitation), I headed back to my room to bum around for a few hours before 6pm, which was when the tennis team had planned to meet to go trick-or-treating. To be honest, I had had no intention of going anywhere on Halloween, but the trick-or-treating in the Beacon Hill neighborhood was rumored to be top-notch. Plus, hanging out with friends for a few hours seemed infinitely more interesting than psetting in my room. At 5:57pm, I had no costume, having resolved to just tag along in the back while the others grabbed handfuls of candy. Rena ’18, however, who had gone shopping at the Garment District for her wonderful Minnie Mouse costume, was adamant that I dress appropriately for the holiday. A 15 minute delay in the meeting time allowed for some scrambling on our part to put together something passable. After asking around for last-minute costume ideas, we settled on one of the easiest costumes to pull off: ninja. Wow, I really need more black clothing) Get your hands on a plastic knife so you can look more menacing. Bring an apple in case you decide to be a fruit ninja. Versatile costumes are the key to a stress-free round of trick-or-treating. Promptly drop said apple multiple times on accident until it becomes a squishy mess. Dispose of apple, because let’s be honest, regular ninjas are so much cooler than fruit ninjas. Also, the apple is, at this point, leaking all over your hands and it’s kind of gross. Congratulations, you’re a ninja! Me as a ninja! Plus a random guy texting casually in the background. We took some photos in Lobby 7 to commemorate the moment, making sure to take a few in front of the MIT seal, a hot spot for tourists and visitors. I’m pretty sure a group of tourists walking by were taking pictures of us being silly. Now I exist as a digital copy in some stranger’s pocket. I can’t tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but I’m going to count this as a win for now. After taking the red line to MGH, we walked a few blocks into Beacon Hill where some streets had been blocked off by the police so children and trick-or-treaters could run amok between the houses. Instead of the usual business of walking up long driveways and knocking on doors, residents in the cordoned off area were sitting on their front steps with enormous bowls of candy, ready to greet costumed individuals and pass out the goods. The cobbled pathways, which theoretically sound very quaint, were actually a nightmare to walk on in flip-flops, but in the moments where I wasn’t tripping over my feet, I was admiring the festive decorations and the adorable costumed individuals who were our candy-seeking brethren. There were jack-o-lanterns grinning wickedly from front stoops, glowing lights crisscrossing the narrower alleyways, and the usual, spiders, ghosts, and ghouls dangling from ledges, fences, and low-hanging branches. As we approached one particular stoop, we noticed a small hooded statue-like decoration in front of the door. Being the paranoid individuals that we are, we spent a minute or so discussing whether or not we thought it was a person or a decoration. Having decided that it was, indeed, simply an amazing prop, we approached the door for our handful of candy. As Ava asked the stoop-owners whether or not the figure was just a decoration (one can never be too safe), it leapt to life and shouted, startling us and eliciting a scream from Victoria. It was hilarious. I wasn’t expecting much when I left campus, but to my surprise, the holiday spirit had been infectious. It was nice to feel like a kid again. I had been concerned that we would be too old to be gallivanting through the streets and asking for candy, but there were other college students trick-or-treating just like us. From babies in strollers disguised as giant spiders, to adults dressed in full-sized Big Bird suits, everyone was having a ball, and I was thankful that I was a part of it. After trick-or-treating, we swung by Chipotle to take advantage of their Halloween $3 deal for costumed individuals, and ate a quick dinner at Cosi, laughing about the night’s shenanigans. Stuffing my face with bread from Cosi was a good way to end the holiday festivities so we headed back to campus soon after. Sitting in my room now, my sugar intake so far has consisted of four Swedish fish, one peanut mm, one gummy bear, a fun-sized snickers bar and two dumdums (mystery and strawberry flavored). Im already sick of candy. Maybe that’s another reason why I’m not a huge fan of Halloween: the sugary currency of my childhood, often the source of intense bartering and trading after a night of trick-or-treating, is no longer of much value to me. Regardless of how my sweet-tooth has evolved over the years, I had a lot of fun reliving childhood memories and making new ones that I will inevitably look upon fondly in the future and into my elderly years. For instance, as the existence of a Kurdish nation in Turkey was traditionally ignored and being pursued as an official policy, the Turkish government limits the scope of studies on all aspects of Kurdish life. Academic debate and research were also severely suppressed by the hegemonic representation of the Kurds in the state’s discourse as a case of separatism, terrorism, and so on. Moreover, since the basis of this hegemonic representation was a state-sponsored classified research, it prevented researchers from questioning the officially recognized representation of the Kurds or engage in issues related to Kurdish society and culture. However, when the Kurdish national movement emerged and political activism in Turkey increased in the 1980s, studies addressing various issues and focusing on aspects of Kurdish society and politics were freely carried out and published. Some of these studies focus on Kurds origin and identity while others are more interested in conflict analysis, re-emergence, and evolution of Kurdish nationalism. As a stateless people who have been exposed to oppression, suffering, subordination, and forced migration, Kurds history, and origin, according to the literature relates to their struggles to gain independence and freedom. For this reason, the main components of Kurds identity include their homeland, the memory of the past, shared experiences, language, and national symbols. Their homeland, according to the literature is â€Å"Kurdistan†, a territory delineated by the Allies after World War I.   Kurdistan consist of a two hundred thousand square miles of mountainous expanse and some 550,000 square kilometers of land spanning the present state boundaries of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Henry Mintzberg was born September in Montreal, September 2, 1939. He was an internationally renowned academic and author on business and management. Henry Mintzberg is an internationally renowned academic and author who write prolifically on the topics of management and business strategy, with more than 150 articles and fifteen books to his name. He came up with the roles of management, which he believes cover most of the things a manager will encounter in their job. The reality of management is that the pressures of the job drive the manager to take on too much work, encourage interruption, respond to every stimulus, seek the tangible and avoid the abstract, make decisions in small increments. Mintzbergs key contribution was to highlight the importance of understanding CEOs time management and tasks in order to be able to improve their work and develop their skills appropriately. ÂÂ  these normative systems. Mintzberg does not assume ex-ante what an (in)effective or (non)successful manager entails. He also neglects the relationship between managerial behaviour and organisational effectiveness. Furthermore, he takes a neutral position on the managerial role omitting influences such as ownership and power. Identified contingency factors explain differences in the make-up of managerial work.The empirical study is based on five organisations in action. The small sample size means that the results should not be applied to all industry, organisations or management positions. In his 1973 study, Mintzberg declared that the managers position is always the starting point in organisational analysis. He also argued that managerial roles are sequential a manager first makes interpersonal contact through his formal status which in turn allows information processing and leads to decision making. Mintzberg later rejected this relationship based on new empirical data. The term management roles refers to specific categories of managerial behaviour, and Mintzberg concluded that what managers do, can be described by studying ten different and interrelated roles, grouped around interpersonal relationships, transfer of information, and last, but not least, decision making. Interpersonal Roles The ones that, like the name suggests, involve people and other ceremonial duties. Leader Responsible for staffing, training, and associated duties. Figurehead The symbolic head of the organization. Liaison Maintains the communication between all contacts and informers that compose the organizational network. Informational Roles Related to collecting, receiving, and disseminating information. Monitor Personally seek and receive information, to be able to understand the organization. Disseminator Transmits all import information received from outsiders to the members of the organization. Spokesperson On the contrary to the above role, here the manager transmits the organizations plans, policies and actions to outsiders. Decisional Roles Roles that revolve around making choices. Entrepreneur Seeks opportunities. Basically they search for change, respond to it, and exploit it. Negotiator Represents the organization at major negotiations. Resource Allocator Makes or approves all significant decisions related to the allocation of resources. Disturbance Handler Responsible for corrective action when the organization faces disturbances. Comparison Fayol identifies five elements of management- planning, organising, co-ordinating, commanding and controlling all of which he believed were necessary to facilitate the management process. In comparison Mintzberg considers management activities to fall within three broad groups- interpersonal, informational and decisional which encompass his ten management roles of figurehead, leader, liaison, spokesperson, disseminator, monitor, resource allocator, entrepreneur, disturbance handler and negotiator. Although due to their differences, these theories can be treated as competing views, both can also be perceived as reinforcing the other as many parallels and similarities intrinsically exist. Consequentially the term managerial style combines the two theories. Mintzberg obtained his theory as a result of research based on observation. Hence, his roles directly depict what managers do. He argues that Fayols functions do not describe the actual work of managers at all; they describe certain vague objectives of managerial work (Mintzberg 1971). As he observed the managers in his research, he found that all activities captured at lease one of his ten roles in practice whereas they could not be simplified to be known singularly as one of Fayols functions. For example, a manager sending a memo out to subordinates informing them of the outcome of the mornings meeting is directly taking on the informational role of disseminator- providing internal personnel with information obtained either external or internal of the organisation.
